The 2019 GMC Sierra in Madras, OR is a full-size pickup truck that is worthy of praise. With a tough exterior, reliable engine, and various amenities, it is a force to be reckoned with. However, faced toe-to-toe against the 2019 Ford F-150, Ford remains the best in its class, thanks to its outstanding performance, improved interiors, and higher emphasis on safety.

Safety Comparison

Correlating to their toughness, the 2019 GMC Sierra and 2019 Ford F-150 have impressive safety amenities. Both models come with a complete airbag system, a rear-vision camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The Sierra boasts of the newly updated StabiliTrak electronic technology that maintains control. Not to be outdone, the F-150 comes with the equally-as-effective Ford Traction System, which ensures solid handling for the pickup.

With both vehicles having aced the safety system inspection, we turn to the road safety tests. Both models have yet to be comprehensively tested by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) for 2018, so we revert to their closely-similar predecessors.

The GMC Sierra was doing very well up until the front crash prevention test, where it only earned a Basic rating. The Ford F-150, on the other hand, passed the front crash prevention test with flying colors, getting a Superior rating. In the process, it also garnered a Top Safety Pick rating from the IIHS. All in all, the F-150 is the top safety choice.

Passenger Space Comparison

For vehicles that have rugged exterior designs, the 2019 GMC and 2019 Ford F-150 have surprisingly classy interiors. Both employ high-quality materials for the cabins. Though there are still little plastic touches, the overall comfy feel inside is not compromised.

Both interiors give excellent choices for cloth and perforated leather seats and have heated and ventilated seats to withstand climate changes. In addition, both have landmark infotainment systems. The GMC Infotainment System and Ford SYNC 3 system come complete with AM/FM/SiriusXM radio capabilities, as well as Apple CarPlay/Android Auto technology for smartphones, 4G Wi-Fi hotspot capability, and voice-activated technology.

Despite their similarities, the F-150 gets the upper hand when it comes to the audio speaker system. The F-150 boasts of the ten-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, whose sound quality rates higher than the Sierra's Bose speaker system. To the trained ear, the F-150 gives a slightly more pleasurable audio experience.  This gives the F-150 the edge for its interior.

Reliability Comparison

The 2019 GMC Sierra and Ford F-150 each offer warranties for three years/36,000 miles and powertrain warranties of 5 years/ 60,000 miles. These warranties are both promising for the pickups, as they garner the highest expectations from customers. Being fairly new, both trucks are still being evaluated for overall reliability; thus, we refer to the record of the similar preceding models.

Based on ConsumerReports.org's past data, the Sierra has been reported by customers to have minor issues with its electric system, transmission, and paint/trim. The F-150, on the other hand, reported nearly 0 incidents.

Meanwhile, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued five safety recalls for the Sierra for airbag, seat belt, suspension, and electrical system issues. The F-150, on the other hand, got close to no recalls and had fewer reported units. Hence, the Ford F-150 unanimously wins the battle for reliability.

Engine Comparison

The 2019 GMC Sierra and 2019 Ford F-150 have diversified their engine selections. With every trim, there is a specialized engine that brings out the best for the vehicle it supports. The GMC Sierra selection ranges from the turbocharged 2.7L turbocharged engine up to the 6.2L V8 engine. The Ford F-150 has a wider range of engines: there's the 5.0-liter V8, the turbocharged 2.7-liter V6, the 3.5-liter V6, and the turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 for higher trims.

All F-150 trims sport superior engine horsepower to their Sierra counterparts, generating up to 450 hp compared to the GMC's 420 hp. The power advantage of the F-150 manifests itself in the towing and hauling capabilities of the truck, which is arguably the best criterion for this segment. The Ford pickup notched a maximum trailering of 13,200 lbs as opposed to its GMC rival's 12,200 lbs. The F-150's maximum payload of 3,270 lbs trumps Sierra's 2,160 lbs. The F-150 also has the edge in highway driving, getting 25 mpg compared to Sierra's 23 mpg. It's a close race, but the F-150 tops the Sierra again in this category.

The all-new 2019 GMC Sierra in Madras, OR proves its worth as one of the exciting new full-size pickup trucks. However, the 2019 Ford F-150 is still a better choice, based on engine performance, towing and hauling capabilities, and overall reliability. Ready to drive your very own F-150?
